Saarenmaa diving trip 6-9 September 2018 of Kupla diving Club.

This was my first diving trip to Estonia. Liisa and Ulla had been here before.
The divers were: me, Eero, Ulla, Liisa, Juuso, Mikko, Karo, Jaakko, Sonja. Pipsa was with us, but could not dive. Mikko and Liisa had just acquired JJ CCR’s.
This was our first "check dive" of the trip on our day of arrival.

We had taken the Silja Europa ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn and slept over night at the harbor. Then at 8 AM started diving towards Saarenmaa and arrived to Pidula Forell around noon. On the Virtsu-Kuivastu ferry we also met already Sander, who was the main organizer from diving club Barrakuda. We stopped at Kuresaare to buy some lunch.
Then after arrival to Pidula Forell we quickly unpacked the cars and were soon ready to dive. We had brought all of our own scuba diving equipment and had full tanks.
Sander gave us a briefing and then we packed the van and trailer and headed to the fishing boat harbor. Then we loaded the RIB boat with diving gear. It was only 15 minute boat ride from the Veere harbor. The weather was nice, sunny and unusually warm for September. Surface water was 18 deg-C.

The first dive was to the wreck of a Soviet Union era STB Fishing Trawler. It was a small wreck, only 19 meters, but in good condition. Bottom at the wreck 20 meters.
Eero was my buddy on this dive and we were first pair into water. Eero has PADI OWD and had started to dive only last year. He was diving with a single 12 liter tank, while I had 2x10L. I had my Olympus TG-5 camera with me. I had 55 degree lens in my dive torch.

Sander had dropped a marker buoy at the wreck site, so me and Eero went down the line. The line was going straight to the wreck. Visibility was only about 5 meters, but there was lot of light still at 20 m depth. At the bottom it was 17 deg-C, so quite warm. Because of this also visibility was not so good.
We circled the wreck about 3 times, as it was so small. When Eero had 70 bar left we started to return to surface and did safety stop at 5 m. Dive went well without issues. Then back to the RIB boat. On this boat the procedure was to first remove weights, then all the gear and hand everything to the boat crew. Then up the ladders at right hand side rear. Eero dropped a Suunto Vyper to the sea about 60 meters away from the wreck. As the buoy was too light for mooring, the boat had to drive around the dive site.
Dive went without serious issues for all. Karo’s dry suit leaked from gloves, so she apparently did not enjoy the dive so much.

After everyone got back to the boat, we drove back to harbor and then with the vans back to Pidula Forell, where dinner was served.
