2019-12-13 dive 17, Vilivaru Giri
The last dive of the trip at South Male Atoll. MV Voyager started engines at 4:30 am, but the wakeup was going to be at 7:00. I woke up but then continued sleeping until the official wakeup at 7. Voyage travelled across the channel from Vaavu to South Male atoll and the ride was bit rough, big waves. The original plan was for Kandooma Thila, but that being exposed to big waves, the plan ws changed and we dived Vilivaru Girin instead. The guide was again Nannu with me + Nick, Jeff + Yolanda, Annie + Tom. Chris took Petr + Sanne, Jules the Spanish team.
Current was a bit stronger, we dropped on the sheltered side to the bottom at 31 meters. First along the gilir wall reef on right hand side, then to some side pinnackles. This side was in shadow of the giri, so it was dark, and visibity not so as current was lifting up a lot of sand. The current was starting to push against us. Reaching a corner of the giri the current got really hard and was hard for me to get around that corner. Just Nannu, me, Nick and Petr made it. Others gave up and ascended to surface. Around the corner there was short area with current flowing on both sides, but the going forward the current pushed hard to the other side of giri where the sun was shining. I stopped to take photos and video, while the rest were pushed away by current behind a corner so I lost them for a while, current pushed me to the top of reef and I managed to grab a thick rope attached to reef, looking around I could see in distance where the others were and returned to them. Here visibility also better, but it was a about time to end the dive, so up to safety stop. So back to dhoni.
Now it was time to disassemble our equipment. The crew would rinse everything, so we left our hardware to our boxes, and suits to a pile to be washed. Then back to Voyager for breakfast. Now all diving was done.
