2019-12-12 dive 16, Alimatha Circus
Last dive of Thursday at the Alimatha. Here many liveaboard boats had gathered. Our plan was to dive the channel in front of the Alimatha resort and see Tawny Nurse Sharks (Nidhan Miyaru in Maldivian). The guide was again Nannu with me + Nick, Jeff + Yolanda, Annie + Tom. Chris took Petr + Sanne, Jules the Spanish team.
The current was flowing inward and was mild to moderate. We were dropped at the mouth of kandu upstream, then dropped to sandy bottom at 22 meters, started to drift with current. It was afternoon dark and lot of sand in water. Very soon sharks appeared swimming against the current towards and past us. Then we stopped a spot where some sharks had stopped to rest at the bottom. We used reef hooks, although the current was not so bad and you swim against current quite easily. We took lots of photos and video. Then after half an hour unhooked and started to drift again. Then we came to a spot where there were a dozen of sharks resting on the bottom and we of course stopped again. Everyone was running out of no deco time, so we had to go higher up. At 40 min the others ascended due to low air. Me, Nick and Nannu stayed at 12 meters on a spot with some rocks, above them a big school of fusiliers. Nick hooked to rock, and I stayed on the bottom. We spent some 10 minutes there and then it was to end the dive. Back to dhoni, to boat, and afternoon cake, followed by some beers before dinner. There was a nice sunset, the Venus rising and full moon.
I did get a lot photos and video from the Nurse Sharks, but since the light was quite poor and so much sand in water, they are not so impressive. Some sharks came pretty close to me.
Dinner was Maldivian dishes. Just when dinner started, so did the rain and hard wind that was over by end of dinner. Wen to sleep at 22:30. Wakeup was going to be 7:00.
