2019-12-12 dive 15, Fotteyo, Hurahu Kandu
After breakfast Voyager started sailing toward Fotteyo, which is the easternmost end of the Maldives. There was apparently some kind of leaking problem in the boat in middle of the way, and the dhoni was attached on starboard side, the two boats traveling together. So there was some delay in getting to Fotteyo. Some time after 11 we loaded the dhoni after briefing, and then it was 20 min dhoni ride to the Hurahu Kandu channel. We first dripped Lana for snorkeling at middle of the kandu where there was a a long giri reef topping to 5 m depth. The rest of us were dropped to the NW outer reef wall, the oceanic current pushing towards east. We dropped first to 15-20 meters on the wall. Saw some eagle rays and reef sharks passing quickly by. On the wall there were caverns, some extending quite deep into the reef. One cavern at 24 m where you could swim through. The caverns were really interesting, pretty yellow coral on the ceilings, lots of fish inside. I went to many of them. While exiting from one I managed to crash the dome lens to a coral due to current pushing. This left a nasty honeycomb patterned scratch to the glass lens, and the scratch will no appear on every picture and video, unless I figure some way to polish that and the previous scratches away. Now the lens is in fact full of nasty scratches that do show up in pictures. On this trip they cannot be removed by means available here, but maybe back at home I could try remove them.
Anyway, the dive was fantastic, the caverns were really exiting. I ended up spending a lot of air due to excitement and had only 83 bar left when ending the dive, 2976 liters spent, which is a lot on D12 tanks. Nick had 50 bar left on his single 12 liter tank (1920 liters). I guess the cavern explorations were consuming more, and I also had to continuously catch up the group, as they just continued when I went inside those caverns. Visibility on the wall was not so great, only 20 to 30 meters, when on best places we have seen +50 m viz.
After the dive back to dhoni, dhon to Voyager and soon lunch. Voyager then started sailing north to Alimathaa, where will have the last dive of the day and stay over night.
