2019-12-11 dive 12, Lux Beuru (Whale Shark search)
After breakfast we got a briefing about Whale Sharks, then to dhoni to do search for the whale sharks. The plan was to snorkel first with them and only after that to scuba dive the reef. The reef area was not itself very interesting so seeing a whale shark was the main idea. The dhoni sailed along the reef and back for an hour, there were many other boats out there too. No sight of the whale shark. It was cloudy and raining. So after an hour the decision was to go scuba diving. We dropped down to 20 meters with the reef on left hand side, as far as we could so we could still see the reef. Visibility was 50 meters. The bottom was 50 to 60 meters deep below us, I could see clearly to the bottom where there were reef sharks and rays. I could see clearly to surface where boats were driving over us frequently. We continued east at 20 meters over half an hour but did not see any whale sharks. We did see one Ornate Eagle Ray passing by, and this was a very rare sighting. Then we approached the reef wall, which was quite dull, lot of broken and dead coral, not that much fishes. After 60 back up and to the dhoni.
Then lunch. MV Voyager started sailing east to the Vaavu atoll. The channel crossing was 2 hours and the waves not too bad. I had a small nap.
