2019-12-11 dive 13, Kunavashi Kandu
At 3 PM we reached the west corner of Vaavu atoll, and the it was time to dive the Kunavashi Kandu channel. With guide Nannu it was me + Nick, Annie + Tom, Yolanda + Jeff. Current was flowing towards outside and very strong. We dropped to the inside corner of the channel and dropped quickly down to 20 meters, reef wall on left side, and then all the way to 30 m to channel bottom. The current was quite strong, so we drifted really fast towards the end of channel and once we reached the corner, turned left at 20 meters depth, and there it was more sheltered. The wall here wasn’t so spectacular, but I did see many anemones, some lion fishes.
When we got back to Voyager, and sun was setting the crew installed a big floodlight at the back with the idea that it would attract plankton and then whale sharks. We ate dinner and had a happy hour.
2019-12-11 after dinner whaleshark
Around 9 PM a whale shark finally appeared the back of the boat. Everyone rushed to see it. The shark made many rounds below the strong light to eat. I took first some pictures with cell phone, then fetched my underwater camera and took pictures below the surface by pushing it under water lying on the deck. Then I followed many others and went to snorkel to the water. We kept a few meters of distance so that nobody would touch the whale shark. I got quite many pictures and video, but since it was dark underwater and we had only the surface light from boat, the quality is not so impressive. The whale shark was with us for about an hour. After that we saw some dolphins too. I went to sleep at 23.
