Diving club Kupla organized this shore dive at Hanko on Saturday 3.4.2021. I had prepared my gear in advance and packed my car already Friday. I had also agreed to give ride for my mom to her summer cottage near Hanko. I had agreed to borrow my old dry suit to Jorge, an exchange student at Aalto, but he would only snorkel with that as he had never used s dry suit before and had no training for it. I was going to use my new dry suit with the new undersuit.
I started at 9 am from home, picked up my mom and drove her to her cottage, then continued to Varisniemi and met the other divers there. Varisniemi is at the NW tip of Hanko peninsula, and there is a nice sandy beach. Now the ice had melted, and water was 2 to 4 degrees, air was 4 degrees.
We kitted up and I dove with Paul. We were 4 scuba divers: me and Paul, Eero and Walter, Jorge would snorkel. The beach was very shallow so it was actually a bit hard to enter and exit. Due to this I managed to scratch the dome lens on my camera rather badly as I did not have the lens cover on.
The bottom deepened very slowly so it took 20 min diving in really shallow water to just find the 5 m depth. Visibility was 5 m and lot of sunlight. The sandy bottom had lot of rocks and there was plenty of marine life, although no bigger fish were seen. I took some photos and videos, but nothing spectacular to see. We manged to dive almost the full hour, and after that felt rather cold, but still the thick Weezle Extreme Plus did keep me pretty comfortable. I did have too little weights for this new thick undersuit, the 8 kg was just barely enough to keep me under surface. Towards the end of dive I collected some rocks to suit pockets. Maybe should consider adding 1 kg? The suit did not leak in any way.
After the dive I drove to my mom’s cottage to have some lunch, and then via Kuplakammio to home. I filled my D12 tanks with air.
After checking the videos I noticed that the dome had nasty scratches, and all of those must have come at the beginning of this dive when entering water on the sandy beach. I had to polish the scratches away and I think I managed to get the dome in a decent condition. This was the 3rd time I had to fix the dome.
