Olli J. had arranged this Friday after work boat dive on the boat of Juha Varis, Marona T-30163. It is a Kulkuri 31. On this trip were me, Olli, Alex, Esa, Heikki. I was going to dive with Alex and use the reel to navigate. The planned time to leave harbour was 17:00. This was going to be my first boat dive for 2021, and my diving club’s boats had not been launched yet.
I had prepared my equipment the day before, as had Alex, and I packed also Alex’s gear into my car. We agreed that I pick Alex from Otaniemi at 16:00, the drive to the Sarvasto harbour at east side of Helsinki was estimated 30 min.
On Friday we left as planned. The weather was really nice, almost warm, sunny and not much wind. It was about 1 hour boat ride to the wreck site, just south-east of Harmaja. The dive site contains a number of British Navy shipwrecks, that have been scuttled in 1918 when the German navy was approaching Helsinki. The Brits did not want these small boats to get into German hands, so they were scuttled in haste. The bottom is between 20 to 30 m deeps and there is a confusing mess of debris. The visibility is often bad, so it is best to navigate with a reel. There is a buoy attached, and our boat was hooked up to that.
Me and Alex got into water at 18:30 and we dove around the debris field for half an hour, then ascended. I has doing the reeling and Alex followed. Visibility was maybe 3 meters. It was an easy going simple dive for me without incidents.
I had acquired the day before a 2 kg V-bar that I placed between my twin D12 tanks. With the new dry suit I needed this extra lead, so now I had 4+4+2 = 10 kg. It worked well on this dive. I did not take my camera, as it is too complicated to handle a reel and camera at the same time.
The other divers dove after us, and we were able to leave the site around 20, and back at harbour around 21.
