2021-02-27 D796 Iso-Melkutin ice dive

Dive Club Nousu organized this ice diving event to Iso-Melkutin lake on Saturday 2021-02-27. It was part of ice diving course for 5 students. Plan to use two holes. I had prepare my equipment and packed my car on previous day and was going to drive alone. The drive from home is 97 km and 1:26 using the shortest route. I started driving 8:30 and reached the lake at 10:00. The road was narrow and hard to drive for the last 40 km. The access road to lake in total ice. It was going to be a cloudless sunny day temperature +5. GPS: 60.740489, 24.059858

When I reached, almost everyone were there already, and the first hole was being drilled and sawed open. The water appeared crystal clear as expected. There was no longer snow cover on top of the ice. The ice was about 20 to 30 cm thick.
On my hole there were: Me, Niina (my under ice buddy), Mikko M, Jennifer T, Teemu V.
On the other hole there were: Rupert, Dalia, Henkka L, Riuk M, Robert.
Our hole was open at about 11:30, the safety lines set up, and then it took another half hour for people to kit up and get to the ice. I had carried my set: D12 tanks etc to the ice in advance. I was also taking my Olympus TG-6 camera with video lights. I dressed up to my new dry suit and Weezle thick under suit at my car. But it was so warm that I had to keep top part open.

I volunteered as the safety diver, when Jenny and Teemu did the first dive, and the safety lines were maintained by Mikko and Niina. It was really hot in +5 and sunshine. As soon as first pair got up, I swapped the safety lines and got into the water and waited for Niina. We started the dive at 13:27, and had a plan of 30 min. Water was really clear under the ice, visibility about 20 meters. Sun was shining through the ice and it was very bright to the bottom, which was 9 meters below the hole. I had set the saftely lines at 20 m, so that was the maximum distance we could dive from the hole. But you could see the hole form everywhere we could reach with the line attached to us. Water was +3 and in my suit I felt warm all the time, and the suit did not leak at all. I took some pictures and video. 30 min went really fast and then we had to return to surface. We were last on this hole, as Mikko was going to dive with Rupert using the lines, as they both were cave certified. There is a main line at the bottom of the lake, which a cave certified diver can follow safely in this excellent visibility. I spent some time packing my gear back to car and discussing with others.

Then at 15:00 I left. This time I drove to Riihimäki so I could drive on motorway back home. The parking assist on my car broke during this trip and needs repair. Perhaps the wildly varying temperatures last week has done damage to electronics?
