2021-03-07 D796 Iso-Melkutin ice dive
I organized this ice diving at Iso-Melkutin for my dive club Kupla.
We were 7 divers: me, Olli J, Kimmo H, Ulla, Heikki, Henri, Nicklas.
Only five to dive from the hole we made, Ulla and Henri entered from the shored and used the main line of the lake using cave diving practices.
On the previous day the club’s ice drill was lost, but it had been borrowed and returned just in good time. I was going to buy a new ice drill but all had been sold out. I did mange to buy a new ice saw, and that was good because the old ones were not so good, and this new turned out to be really good.
We had agreed to start at 11:00 at the lake. I had agreed to give a ride for Kimmo in my car. We met at Kuplakammio at 9, and packed the car with ice diving gear. The weather was not so good, it was -5 C and snowing, the road was really icy. We made it to lake at 11 and most of the gang was there already. So we started to drill and saw immediately. The spot for the hole in ice was the same I had used last week. The ice had frozen pretty thick after that, but after removing the ice blocks we discovered that most of the old hole had frozen only 10 cm thick and the edges were 20 cm. The saws worked well but the drill could have been better.
At around 12 the hole was ready, and the safety ropes had been set up. Olli went diving immediately. When Olli was under, Nicklas also went under. Nicklas has a freezing issue with his regulator going to free flow, the temperature being -5 C, but we managed to melt it in the +4 C water. Kimmo was the safety diver.
After Olli and Nicklas came up, Kimmo soon went under. I had meanwhile dressed and kitted up myself and was also ready to go, and soon followed Kimmo under the ice. This time snow had covered the ice and it was cloudy. Therefore, it was quite dark under the ice, much darker than last week when sun was shining thought the clear ice. I had taken my camera and had two video lights on. Water was +3 at the bottom but my suit kept me warm for the entire 30 min, and I did not feel cold even after the dive. The only complaint is for the neck seal that is quite tight in this new suit, but I know it will get better after some heavy use. Somehow my hood also feels pretty tight in cold weather. I took some pictures and video under the ice.
After I came up, also Ulla and Henri had returned from their round and helped clearing the ice diving gear from the ice. We had planned to grill sausages, but the weather being so cold today, we decided not to do that - and drove away. At Kuplakammio I filled my tanks with plain air and left my gear to dry. The suit I took home for drying.
We agreed to try something new next weekend.
