2021-06-06 D805 Juktensklobben wreck
Diving club Kupla’s Hinkki boat was at Porkkalaniemi for the entire weekend and 4 dives were planned. I could only attend this Saturday afternoon dive, and the deeper Trimix dive on tomorrow Sunday. The afternoon dive was originally planned to be the M451, but that had to be cancelled because the military protection area permissions needed had not yet arrived. So we decided on this Juktensklobben wreck that is rarely dived.
The wreck of this wooden sailing ship is unknown and there are no known records of it. It has been built some time after 1767 and probably sank at the end of 1700’s. The ship has been 22 m long, 6 m wide, and was carrying a cargo of bullhide leathers, still to be found. The wreck is a recorded archaeological artefact #2302. Some marine archaeological research has been done at it. It was found in 2002 and lies at the depth of 24 m.
On this boat trip were 9 divers: me, Kimmo, Petri, Markus B, Olli, Emmi, Marianne, Mailiina, Jari I.
It was a sunny warm day, no wind or waves. The wreck was marked already with buoy, which we confirmed sonar to be correct, although in our plotter we had slightly different coordinates. Perhaps the ship was broken in two pieces, and the pieces lie some distance apart?
Me, Kimmo, petri dived first as a triplet. We had agreed a plan of 70 min, 40 min at the wreck and expecting some deco. The others has 32% Nitrox in D12 tanks, I had 30% in D10 tank, as I had already filled my D12 with trimix for the Sunday dive.
At the end of the line there was indeed the wreck at 24 m depth, and visibility was about 3 to 5 m, it was quite bright for that depth, water was 7 C. We circled the wreck about 4 times, found the cargo of hides, some barrels, and 3 anchors, one fallen mast. I had my camera and took some photos and video. We did stay 40 min at the bottom, and I had 5 min deco on ascend, which reduced to 4 min at 5 m. The other guys wanted to practice deco stops at 21, 15, 12, 9, 6 m, so I got plenty off-gassing myself. The total time came almost to 70 min.
It was a nice easy dive in excellent weather, no incidents.
