First technical dive of the season for me to the wreck of Wasa south from Porkala peninsula. I had planned almost a week before to dive with Alex, and for Alex this was his first tech dive after completing the Trimix course.
The dive plan was made for 45 m 20 min, I was going to use D12 TMX 21/35 + Al7 50%. Alex wanted to try D12 TMX24/30 + Al80 50%. I planned to take my camera. We both had Shearwater Predix computers and we agreed to do decos according to the worst display, which we expected to be mine, a few minutes more. A written plan was done just in case.

Our boat Hinkki was already at the Porkala Marin harbour and we were going to be 8 divers. After last minute cancellations we were 7: me & Alex, Olli & Vode, Kimmo, Esa & Markus B. The boat was to depart 10:00. Weather on Sunday morning was sunny and warm, almost too warm for diving. No wind of waves on the way to the wreck that was 1 hour boat ride away.

The wreck was found by sonar from expected location and we dropped two shots with marker buoys. It would be too deep for anchoring, so the boat would drive around during dive operations.
Vode & Olli were to dive first and they entered water. Vode had issues with his dry suit and weights and after some struggle he decided to bail out. Then Kimmo was going to dive with Olli, Esa & Markus next, me & Alex last.
Kimmo and Olli entered water as soon as Kimmo had kitted up. They both had D12s & deco stages. They got under ok and took the smaller shot line down.
Soon after that Esa & Markus left, they took the bigger shot line. Esa had CCR with bailout tanks.
Me and Alex started to kit up, with a plan to diving as soon as Olli and Kimmo had come up. Olli and Kimmo deployed SMD before surfacing and it came up where the smaller shotline was. Then their SMD started drifing pretty fast to south, indicating there was a strong current. We picked them up half a kilometer away.
We heard that the small shotline was going straight to the middle of the wreck so we decided to take that too. And there was a strong current from 21 m up, but no current at bottom and the visibility at the wreck was great.
Me and Alex entered water, did all the checks and then started ascending the small shotline. But indeed the current was so fierce that we lost the line just after few meters and decide to resurface and restart. Now on the 2nd attempt we were better prepared for the current, but could not touch the line because there was only a 2 kg weight on it and it wouldn’t hold. It took fierce finning to fight the current and only at 20 m depth did it stop and descending became easier. We spent lot of gas going down due to current. At 40 m depth we found the wreck. Visibility was indeed really good, about 10 meters, but there was also absolute darkness and it was only our own diving lights giving any light. Then we started diving to the right where the bow was, dived to the bow at 44 m, and then back to the other end of the ship at 38 m. The hull was pretty badly broken at the rear end. The ship was full of interesting details. Then back to where the shotline was.
We had been at the wreck for 20 min, so according to plan it was time of ascend. We switched to deco gases at 21 m, then did short stops at 12, 9 m. At 12 m the current was so strong, that I decided to hold the line. Apparently the small weight at the wreck was jammed against a metal railing down there, so the line was stable. At that current it would have been nasty to deply the SMD, so I decided we will just hold the line. Longer deco stops at 6 and 3 m, then 1m/min to the surface. Total dive time came to 47 min, of which 20 min at the wreck.
We were the last ones up, so after that we started to prepare for way back. Picked up the shotlines and one hour ride back. On approaching the land we could see a rain fron approaching, and once we got to harbour it did start raining. Olli and Markus were to drive the boat back to Otaniemi. I drove my car back.

S/S Wasa was a 700 ton cargo ship that sank on 16th February 1923 near Kallbåda of Porkala Peninsula. The ship got stuck and was crushed by drifting ice sheets. The ship was not reinforced against ice and it sank in just 20 minutes after the hull was broken by ice. The crew escaped onto ice sheets and were rescued by nearby ice breaker Sampo.
The wreck was found 2009 by sonar scanning. The wreck lies at Lat: 59° 48,1300' Lon: 24° 4,0544'. Depth of bottom is 47 m.
