After work boat dive on diving club Nousu’s Vuoksi boat to the wreck of Königin Luise.
We left Suomenoja harbour, pier A at 16:40. Sami was the captain and other divers were Mattias, Anssi, Matti K, Mikko N. This was my 2nd dive on the Vuoksi boat. Original plan was to dive on Thursday, but the weather prediction looked really bad, so it was decided to go on Wednesday instead.
On Wednesday evening the weather was excellent, sunny sky, mild wind and moderate waves. Me and Mikko were the first pair to water with a 75 min plan. We both had Trimix on D12 tanks, and deco stages. I only had 50%, Mikko had both 50% and 100%. I took my camera. We attached Vuoksi to the buoy going to front.
Me and Mikko got into water really quickly. When we got to the wreck, the visibility was a big disappointment, it was terrible, like 2 m max. In spite of that I did attempt to take pictures and some video. The wreck was covered in thick silt and still there was a current on top of it. We circled around the front part in the terribly poor visibility and then after 30 min decided to ascend. At the same time Sami and Anssi had descended to the wreck. I had accumulated 24 min deco. We did gas change at 21 m to 50%, then ascended according to Mikko’s Perdix as he had more deco than me. He had set GF to 45/75, whereas I had GF 30/85. Mikko swapped to 100% at 6m, but still got 4 min more deco in total than me. I had a slight leak on my dry suit left arm. When on surface I noted that the dump valve was loose, and the leak came from there, so that was easy to fix. Water was pretty warm 8 deg at wreck, 12 deg at deco, so that may be the reason for poor visibility.
When we got to the boat, then immediately Mattias and Matti left, and they dove their 90 min plan. When they came back, it was dark, but full moon was rising. Then back to harbour. It was a nice easy trip even though visibility was so bad.
This was my 6th dive to this wreck. The last time I dived here 3rd Aug 2016, the visibility was great, but then I did not bring a camera.
-----
Königin Luise was a German mine laying ship that hit a mine and sank in 25.9.1941. It lies in open sea outside Helsinki in 50m depth. Before the WW2 the ship operated as a passenger and spa ship on the Hamburg-Amerika line (HAPAG). It was 95 meter long and converted to military use in 1939. In operation Barbarossa the ship had orders to lay mines to the Corbetha minefield between Porkkala and Naissaari island. When returning from a mission it hit Russian sea mine, exploded and sank immediately with a loss of 40 lives. The wreck is now in parts. The rear part separated just behind the bridge and lies upside down sticking out on the right side of the bridge. You need a permission from the Military Museum to dive there.
