2021-09-20 D826 Juktensklobben wreck
After work boat dive on diving club Nousu’s Vuoksi boat.
We left Suomenoja harbous, pier A at 16:40. Sami was the captain and other divers were Emma, Antti, Mattias, Topi, Anssi. This was my first dive even on the Vuoksi boat. Vuoksi has a big cabin, so you can stay comfortably inside protected from the harsh weather that was outside. It is possible to dress up dry suit inside. With Hinkki boat I would not do a trip like this. Vuoksi is much slower than Hinkki though, travel seepd 12 kts, whereas Hinkki could do 22 kts. It is surprising that Hinkki can also take more divers than Vuoksi. On Hinkki we can get up to 10 divers, for Vuoksi 7 is max.
We decided on the way that Emma and Anssi will go to water 1st, then Sami and Mattias, me, Anssi and Topi would be triple and wait until Emma and Anssi return.
Weather was a bit rough, wind at 7 m/s from NE, and almost one meter waves, it was a bit doubtful if we could dive at Juktensklobben, but once we arrived there about 17:45, it looked doable. So anchor was thrown next to the wreck and wind pushed the Vuoksi boat just next to the small island.
Emma and Anssi went to water quickly and down the anchor line. Sami and Mattias soon followed. Then the three of us waited a while and started kitting up. All three of us had cameras. Me and Antti were ready to water when Emma and Anssi surfaced at the island’s edge, so we went to water to wait for Topi. Topi had some issues, too little weights, so he could not get below surface. Topi returned to boat to get more weights, while me and Antti descended the anchor line, and on the way down we encountered Sami and Mattias coming up. The anchor line went down around the steep rocky hill bending towards south, then at 22 m we found the anchor at the bottom where the hill stopped. The wreck was right in front of us, lying on the sandy bottom. Me and Antti started going around it to take pictures. Pretty soon Topi joined us, and he was shooting video for photogrammetry. I was mostly taking pictures. Visibility was 3 to 5 m, and it was already totally dark, so all those video lights we had were looking pretty cool over the wreck.
After 38 min of diving at mostly 25 meters, I was on deco for a few minutes already, so Antti proposed that we start ascending the hill. And so we did, Topi followed us. There were plenty of various fishes on the hill, so it was a nice slow ascent, and all my deco was cleared pretty soon. When we go to 2 m depth, we could still see the last rays of daylight coming from the surface, and then we all surfaced. We were just behind the Vuoksi boat, so easy swim bac to the boat.
Anssi was going to drive the boat back. It was a challenges as sun had set and it was really dark, and raining quite a lot. But we did make it back at 21, refueled the boat and back to pier, unloading. It was a nice easy dive, no incidents.
This wreck of a wooden sailing ship is unknown and there are no known records of it. It has been built some time after 1767 and probably sank at the end of 1700’s. The ship has been 22 m long, 6 m wide, and was carrying a cargo of bullhide leathers, still to be found. The wreck is a recorded archaeological artefact #2302. Some marine archaeological research has been done at it. It was found in 2002 and lies at the depth of 24 m.
