Gustaf Adolf on Hinkki boat
After work dive on Monday 6.892021 evening on Hinkki boat of diving club Kupla from Otaniemi harbour to the wreck of Kronprins Gustaf Adolf aka “GA”.
On this boat dive there were 7 divers: me as head captain and dive marshal, Pekka as 2nd captain and DM, Eero, Tuomas, Walter, Paul, Paavo.
Past 3 weeks it had been extremely windy and bad weather in general, so not possible to out to the sea with our boat. Finally for this Monday the weather looked promising so a trip was arranged. Originally 10 divers had enlisted, but then 3 bailed out. I was the only captain & DM on the list so had to take responsibility for organizing. Pekka enlisted at the last moment, so thankfully got him as my 2nd.
I was originally planning to leave the harbour by 16:00 because days are getting shorter and I wanted to do the trip in daylight. But it was hard for people to leave work so early, so then I settled for a 17:00 departure.
Eero helped me to get boat to loading pier. We managed to leave as scheduled. I let Tuomas to drive the boat to destination and Paavo do the navigation. On the way back Paavo drove the boat and Paul was the navigator.
Wind was 5 m/s and waves 40 cm, sunny with some clouds, so slightly rough ride, but we did make it GA at 17:45. We attached the boat to west side buoy. There were to tall buoys, at east and west, and then a smaller marker.
Me and Paavo went to dive first, Eero, Walter, Paul to follow us as triplet. Pekka and Tuomas after we had come up. Plan for me and Paavo was 50 min. We descended from the attachment buoy, and from there followed the line to rear side of the wreck. We wrote names to the UW guest book and then did the clockwise round. I had my TG-6 camera set with video lights on short arms. I took mostly video. It was totally dark down there and visibility about 5 meters. It was an easy round and we came up from the marker buoy, dive time 45 min. On our way out we encountered the triplet.
Once we had ascended, Pekka and Eero went diving. They had a plan of 60 min, but came up a few minutes late. As soon as we had them on boat, we left the site and started driving the boat back. Sun was just setting at 20:00, but there was still some light on the way to Lauttasaari ST1, where we refueled 37 liters. The final drive back to harbour was already quite dark. Overall a very nice and well executed trip, no issues.
On previous dive my left glove leaked. Now I tried the gloves from the old suit and had no issues with them.
This was also the first time with the new Shearwater Perdix AI transmitter that replaced the broken one. It worked fine.

This wreck site is a classic. I have dived here since I started diving 2006. This was my 27th dive here. I have dived here almost every year at least once, but on following years I missed it: 2015, 2018, 2019.
The wreck was found 1995 during sonar research carried out by the navy. Extensive marine archaeological research was carried out. The wreck is very badly destroyed and no insignia has been found. However there is extensive evidence and findings to conclude that this must be the wreck of the “Kronprins Gustaf Adolf” that is known to have sank at this location 6th August 1788.
“Kronprins Gustaf Adolf” was a ship of the line built 1784 at Karlskrona according to drawings made by Fredrik Henrik af Chapman. It was a huge sailing ship, length 50 m, width 13,6 m. It carried 62 cannons and had a crew of 567 men. The ship was part of the Swedish naval forces led by the king Gustaf III used in the war against Russian empire during 1788 to 1790.
On 6th August 1788 the ship was in anchor near the sea fortress of Sveaborg when the Russian navy approached. Other Swedish ships managed to escape, but this ship had problems in departing and finally it sailed on rocks and suffered great damage. The ship had to surrender to the Russians. The Russians took the crew as prisoners of war, pludered the ship of all valuables and set the ship on fire. Then the ship exploded and sank.
Now the badly damaged wreck lies at the bottom at a depth of 20 m. On the summer of 2000 the wreck site was made an underwater museum. There is a guide line around it with guiding signage that explains all the visible details. There are 69 cannons and 2 large anchors and a lot of small details to be seen. It is a popular dive site and entry is free for all.
