2020-08-26 Ryskarin proomu on Hinkki boat
This was an after work evening dive trip of diving club Kupla.
We were 7 divers: me, Tuomas, Eero, Paul, Olli, Heikki, Walter.
I borrowed by 15L tank to Tuomas who was P1 an not much experience, just compleed the dry suit course.
I took my double-12L and had just topped it a little over 170 bar I had left after previous short dive at Hiidenmaa.
The original plan was to leave by 17:00 to Coolaroo.
Olli was the boat captain.
We left only 5 min late, but on the way we concluded that waves and wind were too much to go all the way to Coolaroo.
So we decide to take the Rysäkari instead as it was closer to shore and maybe little easier weather.
I had take my camera rig with me, but just before going to water I noticed that the camera was not inside the housing. I had forgotten to put it back after downloading latest pics from the card, so no camera for this dive.
Me and Tuomas went first on 45 min plan.
At bottom 12 m the visibility wasn't too ba, almost 5 m and water was quite warm 12 deg C.
We circled the wreck twice getting a pretty good tour around all parts.
The dive went as planned and Tuomas dove perfectly fine. After 40 min we started ascending and Tuomas had 70 bar left at surface, I had 157 bar.
The last team to return was Olli and Heikki.
I started the boat engine as the last pair was in the boat. Started to drive to boat slowly at 1400 RPM towards NE, but the engine did sound a bit odd. We only made a few 100 meters, when the engine shut down by itself. Then it would not start. The diesel pump was not running.
The boat was drifting NE towards the shipping lanes at 1 knot.
We called Antti, our boat master, and he also concurred that the diesel pump was probably dead.
We check the engine hoses and wires as much as we could, but there was nothing we could do.
Then we called the boarder/coast guards for help.
After half an hour at 21:00 the boarder guard boat arrived and started to tow us to harbour.
They did not want to tow us all the way back to Otaniemi, only to the nearest Koivusaari east. Towing speed was about 6 knots.
We got to Koivusaari at 21:45 when it was already dark.
I had called my wife to give the car drivers lift to Otaniemi, from where we could drive our own cars to Koivusaari to get our diving gear from the boat.
The boat was left at the pier at Koivusaari.
Next day lot of discussion in our WA group. A new Steyr original fule pump would cost 800 EUR.
But Henri managed to find a generic part from Biltema for only 90 EUR, so he got one and installed it. After that the engine ran again.
This was my first time on Hinkki that something like this happened.
