Second Deeptech diving day this autumn. Because the Hinkki boat of our club was reserved for the P2 course and I had a free Sunday coming, I decided to attend this event as Ari Kapanen was advertising it at Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/495268781255285/?active_tab=about
I registered already on Monday when Ari opened the event and it soon filled up with all 12 divers. There was going to be three dives.
The first dive of the day was going to be to S/S Sundsborg. https://www.hylyt.net/item/sundsborg-2788.
S/S Sundsborg was built in England at T.Turnbull & Son 1877. It was first called Golden Grove. Later the ship changed name many times until it became Sundsborg 1919. It was 77 meters long, 10 meters wide, 1455 brt. There was a 147 hp C2 steam engine and sails on three masts.
In 1929 1st of May the ship hit an unknown object while sailing in ballast from Tallinn to Kotka and started to sink. The crew of 18 abandoned the ship after 3 hours when ship had listed 30 degrees and were all rescued to S/S Lapponia. The ship was left sinking in thickening fog and sank to an unknown location. The wreck was found in the summer of 1999 when surveying cable route between Finland and Estonia. It was first dived in autumn of 1999 but identification was only in 2000 from objects found from the remains of the bridge. Some objects from the wreck have been recovered and restored. The wreck is in fairly good shape and standing on keel at 39 meters of depth. The bottom is muddy and visibility often poor.
As this was going to be pretty deep and I just happened to have a full 2x12L twinset filled with TMX 21/30, my plan was to dive with trimix. I found Mattias Roslund as a buddy and we agreed to dive together. Mattias however planned to use 28% Nitrox, which gives about the same amount of deco, is cheaper to fill but not as nice to dive at such depth. We also agreed to use 50% Nitrox for deco.
I set up all diving gear already on Friday. Gases: D10 TMX 21/30, D10 EAN 32, 7L ALU EAN50. I planned to test my newest photography set. I had bought a new tray system from China for my Olympus TG-5. I was also going to have new arms for the lights, but those had not arrived from China yet, so had to use the older arms I had.
I woke at 8 am, left home 9 am and bought some lunch and snacks on the way and made it to the Porkala maring just before 10 am. There the loading of M/V Deeptech was in full speed and Ari was starting the engine. We managed to depart just after 10 am. We reached the wreck site at 11, but it took quite some time for Ari the get the shot dropped to the right location.
Me and Mattias got to go first, but Harri also joined us as 3rd. We went down the shotline but visibility towards the bottom got just worse and worse. When we got to the bottom at 39 meters, it was almost zero visibility. Harri was assigned to take the reel and we started to do circular search to all directions. We searched for 15 minutes in 1 meter visibility and could not located the wreck. We then decided to give up and return to surface. There were other divers in waiting above us by the shot line. At 21 meters we switched to EAN50, and at that time noticed the tall mast of the wreck. The shot line was at 40 degree angle. So the wreck was directly below us and the shot was probably some 20 meters away from the wreck at bottom. Mattias tried to pull the shot closer to wreck, but it was quite heave and did not seem to move. Later we heard that the last divers had found the wreck next to the shot, so obviously Mattias had managed to pull it closer after all. We were tempted to go back down to the wreck along the mast, but this did not happen. Instead we continued ascent and did all decos according to computers. Harri had the longest decos, being on a Suunto EON. Me and Mattias had Shearwater Predix at GF 30/85. Total dive time was 34 min. And we only got to see the mast.
I had 140 bar left from my Trimix, so decided to keep that and do the remaining dives with my twin 10L tanks filled with 32% Nitrox.
Water was 10 degrees and so quite warm. However, I had put some extra clothing and my weights of 6.6 kg were just about right with these tanks.
