2021-07-26 D823 Eira
On Monday afternoon we were 4 divers to dive the wreck of Eira. It was me, Kimmo, Olli, Alex. I had Trimix 24/24 in D12 tanks, 48% in Alu-7 and my suit gas. It was going to be cold water, so I used my thick Weezle Extreme Plus undersuit. 4+4 kg weights, and my camera. I was to dive with Kimmo.
We left Predium harbour with Hinkki at 5 PM. It was a 30 min boat ride to the wreck site and there was a small marker buoy, but that was not suitable for attaching the boat.
Olli and Alex went down first on a 75 min plan. I was driving the boat around the buoy as we could not attach, and it was too deep to anchor. Olli and Alex surfaced as planned and then me and Kimmo went down with a similar plan. We agreed to start ascent when 100 bar left, or TTS 30 min. Before the dive I noticed that my Perdix AI transmitter was no longer functioning, so it is time to change new battery.
We had heard that previous week the water had been really clear but cold. It was still cold at 4 degrees, but not so clear any more. AT 40 m it was totally dark, but at the bridge at 30 m you could see a faint glow of green from surface. I took some pictures and video. We managed to see most of the deck areas of the ship, and have a peek to the engine room. After 35 min, it was time to start ascent. Ascent with decos took 30 min. After we got back to boat, Olli immediately drove us back to harbour which we reached 21:30.
Eira was a 116 m long freight ship that sank 1969. It was built in France. It was brining a cargo of calcium to the factory of Koverhar when it hit rocks. There was a recue attempt which failed, and so the ship sank to the bottom at a depth of 47 m. You can dive most of the wreck at 35 to 42 m depth range. It is an interesting ship to dive, but out at the open sea and only rarely weather is good enough to dive there.
