Saarenmaa diving trip 6-9 September 2018 of Kupla diving Club.
Dive #4 of the trip. This was to the wreck of HMS Myrtle.
We had 8 AM breakfast and 9 AM scheduled departure. We had all agreed to have 32% Nitrox in tanks, except Juuso who was not Nitrox certified. Sonja agreed to dive with Juuso. Our schedule was delay because Sonja’s manifold was leaking and had to be fixed. The leak was due to failed O-rings inside the manifold, also the manifold had apparently been bent. But it was possible to fix, and we departed at 10 AM.
The ship wreck HMS Myrtle is in the Estonian Maritime Museum registry ID 486, monument 22265. Diving the wreck requires a permission. There is a permanent mooring buoy at the site.
The Azalea-Class minesweeper Myrtle was built in England in 1915. The ship arrived to Estonia during the days of the War of Independence as part of the British squadron. The ship was sweeping the German mine barriers from the sea routes. Myrtle was lost during the days of the War of Independence on a German minefield near Harilaiu on 15 July 1919. The ship was severely damaged in the course of several mine explosions. There were casualties.
Myrtle was first found by the fishermen of Saaremaa in 1934, but the location was soon forgotten. The wreck was found for the second time by the Russian hydrographic vessel GS-214 "Girokompas" in 1990. On 2 July 1999, the wreck was located in the course of fieldwork conducted by the Estonian Maritime Museum. In June 2000, the wreck was filmed for the documentary "His Majesty's Ship". A memorial plaque was placed to the wreck.

The wreck lies now at a depth of 36 meters at location 58:35.349N 21:46.161E, which was 45 min boat ride from the port of Veere. Our plan was to dive with Baltic Grey Seals on our way back at the Vilsandi banks.
This was again too deep for Eero who was assigned with the other group again. Karo also opted out to dive the wreck but wanted to dive with us with the seals.
Me, Ulla and Jaakko were a team, and would go last to the water. Juuso and Sonja would go first. The CCR divers Mikko and Liisa would go first. Our team got to water just before noon. We had agreed to have maximum 5 min deco at 6 m, or less. It was quite dark at towards the bottom and visibility was not so good. But at 27 meters we did see the lights of the other divers at the wreck, so we dove first to the front part, and the bow of the wreck was totally torn open by explosion. Then we dove towards the rear part where the memorial plaque was. There was a current against us. I had my camera with me, but it was very dark and hard to get good pictures. It was a very interesting wreck with lots of details to be seen. Me and Jaakko went to look at the keel and propeller. Then back towards the ascent line. At 25 min Ulla signaled that we should get back to ascent line, my Shearwater NDL was also going to zero, but not yet to deco. Jaakko apparently had some no deco time left. At 6 meters we did 5 min stop. Also Mikko and Liisa soon arrived to 6 meters and it was a very busy time there. Everybody got back to the boat without issues.
Later Sonja told us, that they had spent almost 10 minutes locating the wreck as they went down first and did not have the benefit of following lights of others.
Then we headed to the banks to see seals. Everyone had plenty of gas left. As a precaution there was some extra tanks so refill would have been possible.
