Dive 1/3 of Pellinki trip.

Diving club KUPLA's weekend trip 24-25th August 2019 to Pellinki archipelago. Our base was the tiny island of Katashäll, which has a tiny cottage for 6 persons and a sauna. There is no water nor electricity on the island and it is far away from the mainland.

We used our Hinkki boat, with a small compressor on board. Six divers in total: Ian, Keni, TT, Vode, Heikki, Alpi. We dived 3 wrecks: Raimo-Ragnar, Lea, MFP-498.

1st dive of the trip was planned to the wreck of S/S Raimo-Ragnar. The 3600 dwt steamship Raimo-Ragnar was 84 meters long and sank on 25th December 1943 during the war. It was carrying a cargo of wood from Boistö harbour destination Danzing. It was heading a large convoy using a newly opened secret wartime un-mined route, which had not been properly surveyed. The ship hit a previously unknown underwater rock near Nygrund and stuck on top of the rock. The entire crew was rescued but salvaging the ship failed, so it sank on the next day to the bottom of the sea, sliding down the steep underwater hill. The wreck is now badly broken into 3 major sections resting along the hill between 10 and 33 meters of depth. The cargo is all over the underwater hill.

Hinkki boat and two cars were loaded on Thursday evening already. The plan was to go to the island already on Friday evening 23rd, but this was no go as wind was too strong and extreme rain was predicted. So we cancelled that plan and decided to leave on Saturday morning instead. That was a good decision. Saturday morning weather was nice, not much waves any more and no rain. Saturday morning Vode and TT left Otaniemi harbor with Hinkki boat at 7 AM, and so did the cars. We all met at Benita’s Café on Pellinki main island at 9 AM. Then refueled Hinkki with 62 liters of diesel. The loaded the boat with all the gear and people and drove the boat to Katashäll, where we arrived 15 min later. Then unloaded camping gear, left compressor on board and kitted up for diving. Weather was sunny and warm, wind 5 m/s from NE and waves about 50 cm.

Then we drove the boat to dive site of Raimo-Ragnar. There was no buoy, so we searched by sonar the wreck at known locations and dropped the shot at a promising spot. The anchored the boat near the shot. 1st pair to water were TT and Heikki.

Me and Keni dived as buddies and went down by the shot line as 2nd pair. Agrteed plan was 60 in to 33 meters. We both had 32% Nitrox, me 2x10L, and keni 2x12L tanks. I also had my Olympus TG-5 camera. The 1st pair had taken a reel, and from the bottom at 20m we found a reel line towards west and just a short swim away was the side of the wreck. Visibility was pretty good, but water also quite cold 5 deg-C. We saw the 1st pair twice on the way. We dove slowly along the wreck towards the bow at 30 m, then found the fallen giant bronze propeller. Then back up all the way to stern and the debris field next to the rock that sank the ship at 12m. Then back to the shotline as it was getting cold and we had seen everything. Then slowly up the shot line with a 3 min safety stop at 6 m. It was a nice dive and I took lots of pictures. 3rd pair was Vode and Alpi and we saw tehm going down while doing safety stop. After 3rd pair came back up, we pulled the shot and anchor up and drove the boat back to out island where we made lunch.

While doing lunch we also refilled the tanks on boat. We decided not to carry the heavy compressor and tanks to the island, as the shore was quite hard to climb. The compressor did not run very smoothly again, there is definitely something wrong with the Honda engine. We could only make air fills, so the Nitrox in our tanks was getting diluted by each fill.
