Dive 3/3 of Pellinki trip.
3rd dive of the trip was planned to the wreck of MFP-498.
The MFP-498 was a German Kriegsmarine transport barge which sank on 18th July 1944 near Gåskvättan. MFP-498 was towing other barges when it was bombed by attacking Soviet Union war planes and sank. The barge was 48 meters, 220 dwt, had 3 diesel engines and was armed with 20mm and 47mm guns. The MFP-class “Marinefährprahm” barges were designed and built in Germany for the purpose of invading England. Some 20 of such barges were operating in the Bay of Finland during WW2. The wreck of MFP-498 was found in 1984 with all ammunition intact. The wreck lies upright in depth of 22 meters and can only be dived with a special permission from the Finnish Military museum. We of course had obtained the permit well in advance.
On Sunday morning we woke at 7:30 and then breakfast. Then kitting up and a boat ride to the dive site. Again, no buoy there, so we searched the weck with sonar and dropped the shot and anchored the boat. Keni called the marine control station to report our diving as is required with wrecks under restricted access. Weather was really nice, almost no wind and waves. Me and Keni went to water as 2nd pair. Now the weather was so calm that we entered to water with giant leaps from the front hatch. Usually we back roll to water.
The shot had been dropped perfectly to the wreck, and we descended straight to the deck near stern on port side at 20 meters. Water was really clear and visibility great. We dove first to the bow, looked under the bottom, then towards the stern where the big 47mm gun was. Ammunition and depth charges had long since been removed by the navy. The deck structures have collapsed some years ago. We also looked under the wreck at the bow end, and you could see the propellers and keel that have sank to the sea floor. At this spot the bottom is rock and gravel, therefore good visibility. Again, a really nice dive.

Then back to island, where we made lunch. Then it was time to end the camp and we started to clean up, load our gear back to boat. The next guest to the island arrived already when we were leaving. Then boat ride back to Benita’s Café where we unloaded part of the gear to cars. Refueled Hinkki boat with 115 liters of diesel. Vode and TT drove the boat back to Otaniemi, while we others drove by cars. We met at Otaniemi harbour at 7 PM to unload the boat. Final fill up of Hinkki was 52 liters, so total diesel consumption was 230 liters.
